The photos above are slide film out of my Linhof large format camera. They are my first tryouts using this format and I like them very much :). Taking pictures with large format equipment is as if the entire history of photography would pass you by when you click the trigger. A large format camera itself is a simple construction with only a few components. There is a front-standard with the lens and the back-standard with the film-holder. And in between a bellows. That’s it. But the construction allows several tilting and shifting between lens and film level and so no other camera could be more flexible than a large format one. Obviously it takes some time to take just a single a picture. At least 10 minutes or often more before you took all the adjustments. But then the pliant whir of the shutter is the highlight before packing the camera again.
The other point is the anticipation about how the pictures will look like after having them processed. Processing slide film is the most ambitious craft in developing film. I process them myself and it takes about one till two hours getting them from the chemistry to the peg to drying. Then again one or two hours until they are dry. But then it is a real joy watching the 4×5 inch large slides on the light table

Even if this sculpture is only a “cheap copy” and somewhat kitschy, it anyhow contains a breath of beauty and aesthetics. Nowadays all is so functional, almost sterile, without any sense for detail or beauty. Things only have to work, to compete with efficiency. The faster the better…

Modern jobs blur the line between home and office increasingly. All you need is a little tiny device. Almost everywhere it can be plugged into the global network of work. You’ll always find someone awake, working, too. It keeps you connected 24/7. It can keep you away from life as well…

Autumn has taken over dominance. Landscapes turn into various colors, daylight is much less than before and weather and temperatures go in direction to winter. The change of season finds also reflection in people’s mood. The lightness of life seems to be gone and a serious phase seems to start (again).

Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people.

The peaceful sound of flowing water surrounded by nature is all you need to let your thoughts fly. The stream doesn’t care about decisions, deadlines or priorities. It just flows; same direction and each day.

This shot were taken on a bike tour through the Odenwald (it’s a small mountain range in Germany’s south-west). I saw the scene, pulled the bike off the road and took the shot.

These trees live next to the Rhine and I pass them each day when I go to work. I like their innocence. As they stay in the flood detention area of the Rhine they just live there in peace without any human influence. Since a few years I’ve been thinking of taking a picture of them and last weekend I finally did it.

Speyer is a small beautiful town at the Rhine in the south-west of Germany. With its history of around 2000 years it is also one of Germany’s oldest cities. Even emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and German Kings are buried here and in the middle age it was one of the major cities of Europe. But there is something Speyer also applies to be famous for: It’s the Pretzel. Speyer claims itself for being the inventor of the Pretzel. Probably this is more a legend than the truth. But however, since exactly 100 years they celebrate the “Brezelfest”. A festivity in honor of the Pretzel, which lasts entire 5 days. The scene above is a snapshot of this party.
Since a few years I live in Speyer now. I love this tiny little city
